Watching Five Baby Birds Hatch!

Watching Five Baby Birds Hatch!

Baby Birds

Living in a cabin in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, I’ve always felt close to the nature that surrounds me.

Recently, we had a cool up close nature experience, thanks to a new toy- the Smart Camera Birdhouse from Sweet Hollow Garden. This amazing birdhouse has given me a unique view into the lives of two eastern phoebes, who chose to build their nest on my porch window.

The eastern phoebes started by carefully constructing their nest on a ledge that was waaay too small. They wouldn't choose a new place, so afyer several disastrous collapses,  we added a ledge to help them out... and it worked! And just in time!

The Smart Camera Birdhouse, with its clear video, let me watch without bothering the birds. Seeing the phoebes work so hard to create their home was fascinating, and after they laid their eggs,  I eagerly awaited the arrival of their babies.

After two weeks of dilligent nesting, we noticed the first cracks in the eggs. Through the camera’s live feed, I watched as each of the five baby birds slowly emerged. Witnessing these tiny eastern phoebes take their first breaths was truly special.

They were noisy and messy and funny and amazing. The parents were dedicated to feeding them all day long!

They grew until they hardly fit in the nest, and we watched them grow through the whole two week process. It was addictive!

They all flew away on the 15th day, and we watched as they very quickly learned to fly and catch bugs at the creek. I caught all five babies resting on the same branch here:

Sharing this experience with friends and family and even tiktok has been wonderful. The clear video from the Smart Camera Birdhouse allows me to bring a piece of my mountain home to them.

If you or your parents or grandparents love birds, I highly recommend checking out Sweet Hollow Garden and their Smart Camera Birdhouse as the perfect gift! It hooks to your phone, is waterproof, and is so much fun!
